Sam Allardyce hopes Dubai training camp inspires eighth place finish for West Ham

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has set his sights on an eighth-place finish in the Premier League, claiming that ending the season as high as sixth would be an achievement equal to winning the title.

The Hammers, currently in Dubai for a warm weather training camp, were eliminated from the FA Cup last weekend after a 4-0 hammering by West Brom.

But despite being out of the Cup, Allardyce’s side are enjoying a good league campaign - currently sitting in 10th position.

It could have been even better, too, with the Hammers in fourth place at Christmas - their highest position at that time since 1985.

Their form dipped at the turn of the year and the East Londoners have won two and drawn six of their last 13 games.

Allardyce is realistic about the capabilities of his side, but is targeting a strong finish to the season.

"West Ham at the very maximum are a top-six side,” he told Sport360 at Dubai Sports City. "If we finish sixth, that’s like us winning the Premier League. There’s no doubt about that.

"Eighth for us is more achievable. We should already be there. We should have achieved a lot more points, but we haven’t. That then shows you the frailty of the squad.

"Our performances have been excellent but our victories have turned into draws and this had made us slip down the league a little bit."

"For now it’s about the last 10 games, securing as many points as possible and trying to hit the target of eighth in the league."

In recent years Dubai has been the prime spot for Allardyce to take his players in the winter breaks and 'Big Sam’ hopes this vacation will rejuvenate his squad ahead of the run-in.

"Everything has been as perfect as always [in Dubai],” Allardyce said. "We have been doing this trip for many years and every time we get back to England we always see an increase in the physical output of the players.

"Everybody enjoys training in this climate rather than the cold weather back in England. Hopefully it has served its purpose again and we will have some very good results when we return to England."

Indeed Scorchy, just as in every walk of life its about soundbites, personality and populist comments more than actual performance and results.

Whoever they employ next time as manager, he would be able to get away with taking us backwards in terms of results if he slipped in the odd reference about Tottenham and Millwall being scum in every press conference :-) Managers at football clubs need to tap into the fans sometimes narrow minded, intellectually challenged mindsets ;-)

I mean Stuart Pearce got away with being a desparately poor manager for years just because he connected with the animal instincts of "yer man on the terraces" (or man with an ill fitting suit in a corporate box day out) with that Italia 90 show of passion.

We need a charmer as next West Ham manager. Is Leslie Phillips still alive?

Of course davey. Chelsea are the leaders of the Prem and had several multi-million pound players, some older "past it" players and a 19 year old kid.

But although you and I think of our bench as inadequate other teams would love to be able to call on the likes of Jaaskelainen, JOB, Collins, Demel, Song and Nene.

Even I wince whenever Jarvis comes on but he did cost £10.75m and does work hard.

Here's Crystal Palace's bench from when they beat us 3-1 - Hennessey, Hangeland, Gayle, McArthur, Ameobi, Ledley, Souare...

My point is all our bench can come on and do a job...

Willtell.
Jarvis-underperformed no use over priced non achiever.
Nene-unproved ex-international done nothing lately has been
JOB-Journeyman, totally unispirational player
James Collins- injury prone defender, has about 1 season left in him, has done better this year than last
Guy Demel-off the pace defender, injury prone, goes missing
Jussi- last season in PL should have been replaced
Alex Song-not wanted at Big clubs because he starts well then fades extremely quickly, becomes a liability

As usual, a good and reasoned post.

I expect whomever is the next manager, regardless of when and under what circumstances they are appointed, will probably come under only a fraction of the scrutiny and criticism in every aspect of his words and actions that the current one does, regardless of how the team perform under him.

Not for me Sir Alf. I don't want SA gone for emotional reasons.

My reasons are his poor buying record; (the improvement has come only since the directors employed Tony Henry from Everton as our Director of Recruitment) the weird tactics; even weirder substitutions; the overt loyalty to Nolan; the deteriorating form of lots of players; the association with an unscrupulous agent; the lack of progress by our youth footballers just to mention a few.

Never mind the negativity and excuses that comes out of his mouth every week in self-justification.

:-) made me laugh as that is what is implied by some.

When you boil it down, its not really about the results BFS gets. There was a more valid point in previous seasons about the style we employed with a lone striker every game and much more direct style.

Its just a dislike of BFS I think and more emotional or subjective than objective, I actually have no problem with that and its a good reason to want him replaced as manager. You do need to have a decent rapport with the fans.

Just wish so much energy was not put in by some on this forum pretending its about results and the football BFS's West Ham have achieved and played. When you look at that alone he has done a good job with the money he has been given. COuld anyone else have done better ? Maybe but that is academic.

We dont like him as a man and want him gone is the harsh but fair truth and it really has little to do with football for many I suspect ?

My wife makes lovely salads with oil and vinegar but I'm a real pleb and smother them in Heinz Salad Cream and I don't care who knows it. That's how much a rebel I am....

"You need to compare our bench, our squad beyond the 11, to the top 5/6 clubs"

So our bench is so bad is it? Last game we had - Jarvis £10.75m winger; Nene Brazilian international winger; JOB vast Premiership experienced defender; James Collins vast experienced Welsh international; Guy Demel vast internationally experienced defender; Jussi Jaaskelainen vastly experienced Finnish international; Alex Song vastly experienced Cameroon international.

We fans may think of them as not good enough for WH but, I am sure most Premiership sides would say our bench is very very strong...
